Isaac William Smith was a member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1846. He was admitted to the bar in 1850 and practiced in Manchester, New Hampshire. In 1877, he was appointed an associate justice in the New Hampshire Supreme Judicial Court. He was named a trustee of Dartmouth College in 1885 and held that post until his death. Lord was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1868; he received his AM and PhD in 1893. He taught at Dartmouth College for over 40 years, serving as tutor of Latin, 1869-1872, associate professor of Latin and rhetoric, 1872-1880; Evans Professor of oratory and Belles Lettres, 1880-1882; associate professor of Latin. 1880-1892; Daniel Webster Professor of Latin, 1892-1916.
